Dare to imagine the most impressive fireplace, respectful of the environment. Exceptionally large, the Frontenac is not only a noble hotel located in the heart of Quebec City; it is also the largest fireplace of the Valcourt line, with a 9.4 cubic foot firebox that takes logs up to 30". This sumptuous model has a guillotine glass door and fire screen that simply disappear under the hearth, to easily feed the fire and enjoy the view of the flames.
What kind of fireplace is this? The Frontenac is a low mass decorative fireplace, qualified at Phase 2 of the US EPA's voluntary Low Mass Woodburning Fireplace programme — 70% cleaner than an unqualified decorative fireplace. That is a different category from an EPA-certified wood heater like the Lafayette II or Waterloo: emissions are measured in grams per kilogram of wood rather than grams per hour, and there is no published efficiency or burn-time rating. Valcourt recommends it for spaces under 1,000 sq ft and states that it must serve as a supplementary heat source. The Frontenac is bought for the spectacle of a very large open fire, not to carry a heating load.
The Frontenac FP11D needs a trim and firebox panels to be complete. Choose from each required group below.
Osburn and Valcourt are both built by SBI and share many parts, so some links below open our Osburn listing for the same part number.

Read the chimney height first. The Frontenac requires an 18 ft (5.5 m) minimum chimney height — three feet more than every other fireplace in the Valcourt range. On a single-storey installation that can be the difference between a straightforward job and needing additional chimney sections and bracing, so check it before you order.
| Minimum chimney height | 18' (5.5 m) |
| Framing lumber | 2" x 3" (5 cm x 8 cm) or heavier |
| Clear height above the fireplace, no combustibles | 7' (2.15 m) minimum |
| Side wall, measured from the door opening | 20" (508 mm) minimum |
| Combustible materials at the sides of the door opening | 8" (203 mm) minimum |
| Maximum projection of a combustible mantel | 3" (76 mm) |
| Hearth extension in front of the opening | 20" (50 cm) minimum |
| Hearth extension each side of the opening | 12" (30 cm) minimum |
| Chimney clearance to combustibles | 2" (50 mm) minimum |
The hearth extension is larger than on the smaller Valcourt models — 20" in front and 12" each side — so allow for a non-combustible hearth roughly 7 ft wide overall in front of the 44 1/2" door opening.
