Dimplex Deluxe 39" Built-in Electric Firebox

The Dimplex Deluxe 39" Built-in Electric Firebox (model BF39DXP) is the traditional end of the Dimplex range — a proper firebox shape with a brick-look interior and a log pile, meant to be built into a wall and finished with a trim or a door so that nothing about the result says "electric". At 39" it is the size most often specified to replace a decommissioned wood or gas fireplace.

It is also the line Dimplex builds for commercial work. The glass stays cool to the touch, there is no flue and no fuel, and it meets the strictest building codes, which is why you find these in hotel lobbies, care homes and waiting rooms as often as in houses.

The Thing That Makes This Line Different: 240 V

Most electric fireplaces are a 120 V supplemental heater and nothing more. The BF series can be wired to 240 V, and at that voltage it produces 9,213 BTU — nearly double what a standard 1,500 W electric fireplace manages, and enough that Dimplex positions it as part of a primary heating plan rather than a top-up.

Decide this before your electrician roughs in. Converting later means pulling a new circuit.

Will It Fit? Rough Opening

Framed opening width 39" (99.1 cm)
Framed opening height 32 7/8" (83.6 cm)
Framed opening depth 16" (40.5 cm)
Firebox dimensions (W x H x D) 38 3/4" x 32 3/4" x 15 3/8" (98.4 x 83.3 x 38.9 cm)
Viewing area (W x H) 35 5/8" x 22 1/4" (90.5 x 56.5 cm)
Installation height Floor level or mid-wall

Note that the firebox is smaller than the opening in every direction. Unlike a linear fireplace with a built-in flange, this one drops into the hole and leaves a gap — the BF4TRIM39 trim kit or one of the door kits is what covers that gap. Budget for one of them; the firebox on its own does not finish the opening.

At 16" of framing depth this needs a purpose-built chase or a masonry opening — it will not go into any stud wall.

Electrical Requirements

Voltage options 120 V, 208 V or 240 V
Flame only, no heat 245 W, 2.0 A
120 V with heat 1,440 W, 12.0 A — 4,913 BTU/h
240 V with heat 2,700 W, 11.25 A — 9,213 BTU/h
Connection Hardwired to a dedicated circuit, or the optional BFPLUGE plug kit

That 245 W flame-only figure is worth noticing: running this fireplace for the look alone costs about as much as a couple of light bulbs.

Clearances

The BF series is a zero-clearance design, with one exception. From the installation manual: insulation and vapour barrier must be kept a minimum of 2" (5.1 cm) from the top of the unit, and no combustibles may be placed on the top surface of the fireplace. Everywhere else, framing can come right up to it.

Key Features

  • The Original Dimplex Flame Effect™
The effect the company built its name on.
  • Patented Inner Glow Logs
Individually moulded and hand-finished logs that pulse and glow from within, rather than being lit from below.
  • Brick-Look Interior
A moulded brick firebox behind the logs, which is most of what sells the illusion at a distance.
  • Cool-Touch Glass
Safe in a nursery, a care home or a public lobby.
  • Three-Stage Control
Flames with half heat, full heat, or flames only. Optional BFRC-KIT remote or WRCPF-KIT wall switch.
  • External Thermostat Compatible
Works with a wall thermostat such as the TS521W.
  • All-Season Flames
Run the flame with the heater off, any month of the year.
  • Commercial Grade
Meets the strictest building codes; designed for public spaces.

Deluxe or Standard?

We stock the 39" in both builds. The Deluxe (BF39DXP) on this page has the patented Inner Glow logs and the brick-look interior; the Standard (BF39STP) uses logs moulded from real wood and costs less. Same opening, same electrical, same heat output — the difference is entirely in how the firebox looks when it is running.

Documents & Downloads

A note on the sell sheet. Dimplex's BF sell sheets label the three framing dimensions A, B and C, and the labels are transposed — the sheets print the framed opening width as though it were the depth. The figures on this page come from the installation manual and the 3-part architectural spec, which have it right. If your installer is working from the sell sheet and the numbers look odd, that is why; call us.
